HISTORY: The firm Dacosta Ltd was founded by David Dacosta who first came to Barbados with his family in the middle of the 18thcentury. The firm Mannings was founded by Samuel Manning in 1878, who originally offered a shipment of American oats and shingles and later branched into hardware, lumber and other merchandise.
In 1920, Dacosta & Co. Ltd amalgamated its business with five other companies – Manning & Co. Ltd., S. P. Musson Son & Co. Ltd, Gardiner Austin & Co. Ltd, Wilkinson & Haynes Co. Ltd. and R. & G. Challenor Ltd, resulting in the formation of a “controlling” company registered as The Barbados Shipping and Trading Company Limited. In 1931 Dacosta & Co. Ltd extended their activities into planting with the acquisition of Walkes Spring in St. Thomas, River and Vineyard in St. Phillip and a large share in Three Houses Factory. In 1945, the company purchased Sandy Lane Co. Ltd to extend its increase in planting activities. In 1946, activities were extended into the stevedoring business.
Due to an overlap of businesses, October 1965 saw another merger, that of Dacosta & Co. Ltd and S. P Musson, Son & Co. Ltd., to form the company of Dacosta Musson Ltd. This merger ended in October 1982 and the two companies again became standalone companies - DaCosta Ltd. and S. P. Musson Ltd., until October 1995 when DaCosta Ltd. merged with Manning Wilkinson & Challenor to form Dacosta Mannings Inc. In 2000, the company merged with Modern Living and has split its business into two divisions, mainly Retail and Commercial.
In July 2011, Dacosta Mannings Inc. was split to form DacostaMannings Retail Ltd and Dacosta Distribution Ltd.
DacostaMannings Retail Ltd has emerged from a strong history of business acumen and vision and is one of the leading companies in Barbados offering a diverse range of consumer goods.
